The FAST TRAIN Program offers a 15-credit online certificate program in special education (ED/LD PK-12) to meet the demands of teachers and educational professionals who need a foundation in this area. Teachers, teaching assistants, counselors, and administrators may benefit from this program. Completion of the courses in this program does not qualify you for a teaching license in special education. However, each course will count towards the Virginia state license and a Master's degree in special education at George Mason University. Additionally, the credits will count towards renewal of a Virginia license.
The Online Special Education Certificate Program consists of completing five online courses over three semesters. Students may begin in any semester. The course schedule is as follows:
Fall (late Aug-mid Dec):
EDSE 627: Psychoeducational Assessment
Spring (early Jan-mid Apr):
EDSE 501: Introduction to Special Education
EDSE 662: Consultation and Collaboration
Summer (June-July):
EDSE 502: Classroom Management and Applied Behavior Analysis
EDSE 540: Characteristics of Students with ED/LD
All coursework requires field experience each semester. Field experience consists of 15 to 20 hours per course of observation, tutoring and working with students in small groups in a PK-12 setting or classroom.
