Special Education Online Certificate Program (E1-CERG-SPFT)

We are recruiting now for Spring 2010 Cohort!

The FAST TRAIN Program offers a 15-credit online certificate program in special education (ED/LD PK-12) to meet the demands of teachers and educational professionals who need a foundation in this area. This program helps teachers, teaching assistants, counselors, and administrators identify and work with students with special needs.  Students learn how to offer differentiated instruction, provide additional and appropriate resources, and offer strategic planning to help special needs students succeed.

Each course counts towards the Virginia state license in Special Education as well as a Master's degree in special education offered on site at George Mason University.  Completion of the courses in this program does not qualify you for a teaching license in special education. Additionally, the credits will count towards renewal of a Virginia license.

The Online Special Education Certificate Program consists of completing five online courses over three semesters.  The course schedule is as follows:

Spring (early Jan-mid Apr):
EDSE 501: Introduction to Special Education
EDSE 502: Classroom Management and Applied Behavior Analysis

Summer (June-July):
EDSE 662: Consultation and Collaboration
EDSE 540: Characteristics of Students with ED/LD

Fall (late Aug-mid Dec):
EDSE 627: Psychoeducational Assessment

All coursework requires field experience each semester. Field experience consists of 15 to 20 hours per course of observation, tutoring and working with students in small groups in a PK-12 setting or classroom.
