Master's International Program Course Schedule and Curriculum

Master’s International (MIP) students study on campus for approximately one year prior to Peace Corps service. During this time they complete the eight courses required for provisional Virginia ESOL licensure, seven of which will count toward the Master’s degree.

Summer I (Mid June - Late July)
EDCI 516: Bilingualism/Language Acquisition Research
EDCI 519: Methods of Teaching Bilingual/English as a Second Language Settings (Pre-requisite EDCI 516)
EDCI 520: Assessment of Language Learners (Prerequisites EDCI 516, EDCI 519)

Fall
EDUC 511: Introduction to International School Teaching (online)
EDRD 610: Reading and/Writing in Multilingual/Multicultural Settings (online)
(Prerequisite EDCI 516)

Spring
EDCI 510: Linguistics for ESOL PK-12 Teachers (online)
EDUC 537: Foundations of Multicultural Education (online)

(Break for Peace Corps service, including foreign language study)

Summer II
EDRD 525: Emergent Literacy for English Learners
EDCI 521: Curriculum Development for Language Learners*
(Prerequisite: all other coursework but EDCI 777)
EDCI 777: Theory to Practice* (course must be taken last; begins on March 1 as a summer course; plan accordingly; see full schedule for details.)

General Requirements:

ESOL Licensure
Eight courses (24 credit hours) + 6 credit hours of a foreign language (or documented foreign language study in the Peace Corps)

Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction* *
Three courses (6 credit hours)

Internship
Counts as six semester credits. Waived if at least one year of Peace Corps service is completed as a PK-12 ESOL teacher in a government-approved host-country school.

**A Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction requires completion of both licensure course work (21 credit hours) plus additional Master’s degree course work (9 credit hours) for a total of 30 credit hours.
