International Baccalaureate® Programs

George Mason University’s Center for International Education with FAST TRAIN Programs has collaborated with the International Baccalaureate® (IB) to create two IB programs fully recognized by the IB:  the Elementary Education Virginia State Licensure-IB Teacher Award Level I Program (for teacher candidates) and the Mason Certificate in Advanced IB Studies with the optional master’s degree through ASTL (for practicing IB teachers).

Elementary Education Licensure-IB Teacher Award Level I (for Teacher Candidates)

The elementary education licensure/Award Level I program is a program for those wishing to become teachers, need licensure and are interested in the IB program.  In this program, the student:

  • Applies to and follows the FAST TRAIN Elementary Education Program
  • Completes elementary education course work and the IB capstone course: Teaching and Learning the IB Primary Years (EDUC 621)
  • Teaches for one year in an IB school in a PYP program to complete the internship requirement
  • Becomes eligible to apply to IB for the Teacher Award Level I .  This award, in addition to recognizing superior understanding of the student learner and the principles and practices of the IB curriculum, exempts teachers from further mandated IB professional development.

Mason Certificate in Advanced IB Studies and Optional Master’s Degree in ASTL (for Practicing IB Teachers)

FAST TRAIN’s International Baccalaureate® graduate certificate program is designed for PYP, MYP or DP teachers who are working or want to work in IB schools worldwide.   With successful completion of the graduate certificate, students are eligible to apply to the IB for the IB Teacher Award Level I.  This award, in addition to recognizing superior understanding of the student learner and the principles and practices of the IB curriculum, exempts teachers from further mandated IB professional development.  This unique program is offered in two cohort formats to fit the busy lives of teachers.

The Summer Program

FAST TRAIN’s IB summer program is a 12-month hybrid program combining face-to-face and online coursework.  Students take three courses during an intensive five-week summer session and two courses online during the academic year.

The Online Program

This intensive online program begins every fall semester and continues for 18 months with courses running back-to-back over 10-week periods.

Optional Master’s Degree Program

All passing certificate credits can transfer towards a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with Mason’s Advanced Studies in Teaching and Learning Program. With an additional 15 credits of study, students can obtain a master’s degree aligned with the National Board for Professional Teaching standards and may apply to the IB for theTeacher Award Level II.  These prestigious certifications are designed for students who want to become teacher-leaders in IB schools worldwide.
