Reciprocity

Virginia has signed a five-year Interstate Agreement Contract with the following 44 states and the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico:

Georgia, Guam
Hawaii
Idaho, Illinois, Indiana
Kansas, Kentucky
Louisiana
Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana
Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota
Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon
Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico
Rhode Island
South Carolina
Tennessee, Texas
Utah
Vermont
Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming.

This contract allows the State of Virginia to issue licenses to applicants who hold current, valid licenses with comparable teaching endorsements (i.e., a teaching area that is the same or similar to one of the 57 teaching areas offered in Virginia). This agreement pertains only to teaching areas. Individuals applying for licensure from these states who do not have two years of full-time teaching experience outside the state of Virginia must still meet the beginning teacher assessments required by Virginia.
