Filing for Licensure

Once all requirements are completed including the internship/student teaching requirement, students are eligible for the full Virginia Collegiate Professional License. Information for filing for the license may be found on the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website: and specifically http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/newvdoe/teached.html. Students must complete the entire process. Please follow the procedure below carefully to avoid delays and complications.

  1. Fill out the cover sheet. Click here to download.
  2. Download the teacher licensure application from the website and complete the application. Click here to download. Ensure that the return address that you enter on the application is current and will be current for at least six months.
  3. Those who have completed an internship by obtaining a full-time job will need to have the school where they completed the internship fill out the Report on Experience. This form will be submitted with the licensure application. Report on Experience is on page 7 of the application. Click here to download.
  4. Official transcripts from all universities attended should be attached to the application packet, which includes GMU transcripts and those from schools where general education courses were completed. Students must obtain their GMU transcripts. Click here to download the form to request transcripts. Please ensure that they are sent to Licensure Specialist, MS: 4B3 and that all final grades have been posted prior to requesting transcripts. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that all procedures are followed correctly.
  5. All required test scores should be included with the application packet. Copies are sufficient. Do not send originals, as you should retain them.
  6. Include the application fee, as indicated on the VDOE website.
  7. International students must also submit an official transcript evaluation and an official TOEFL score.
