International Students

In addition to the application requirements that are listed in admissions (specific to each program), the following steps are also required for international (non-U.S.) applicants. Be advised that the processes detailed below can take up to four months, so please plan ahead. Please note that ALL materials listed must reach the admissions office by the deadlines listed under Application Deadlines.

  1. Applicants with degrees from abroad MUST have their transcripts evaluated to determine (1) equivalency of a U.S. bachelor's degree, as well as (2) grade point average. For complete information on transcript submission and evaluation, visit Transcript Guidelines for International Students.
  2. An original financial statement demonstrating sufficient funds for academic and living expenses for the first summer of course work must accompany the application. The student must then show proof of sufficient funds each summer that he/she attends the FAST TRAIN program. For additional information, contact Amy Moffitt in the Office of International Students and Programs.
  3. An International Student Form, found in the graduate application packet, must accompany the application.
  4. Proof of English language proficiency TOEFL test for non-native English speaking applicants must be submitted with the application. For information on qualifying scores and taking the TOEFL or IELTS language proficiency exam, visit English Language Requirements for International Students. Also, visit the TOEFL exam website for more information.
  5. A language proficiency test for all applicants must be passed prior to admission to the ESL program. This test is given by the FAST TRAIN department, so be sure to contact Lynn Walker Levy if this applies to you. This step may be completed once the student has shown acceptable scores on the TOEFL.
  6. Once admitted, an I-20 and student visa must be obtained through the Office of International Programs and Services.
  7. Health insurance is required for all international F1 + J1 visa students at George Mason University. Therefore, you are automatically charged with the insurance premium to your tuition account. Click here to see the insurance website for more information. Please pay special attention to all deadlines. If you already have health insurance that meet all criteria on the application form (page 2, criteria 1-10), , please ask your insurance agent or benefit administrator to complete the Application for an Exemption from Automatic Coverage in the GMU International Student Health Insurance Policy and submit it to the Insurance Office. (Health Insurance Exemption). For more information, contact Angela Drukier, Insurance Coordinator, Student Health Services.
